Savonarola chairs originated in medieval Italy and the style spread through Europe, especially Spain. Production in the Renaissance style continued to the 19th century. Some displayed carved ornamentation on the arms, front and back. Some versions folded while others were more rigid.
This piece was sanded and stained with Jacobean Varathane stain.
All the joints have been freshly tightened and reglued in some spots to reinforce and give it stability.
A brand new backing was created and lined with new padding and upholstered with an antique kilim rug. The rug has hues of navy blue, red, light blue, and mustard. The rug is worn and the age can be seen in the upholstery. I understand it may not be everyone's style, but it better reflects its age and character.
It's sturdy, comfortable, and a show stopping piece now that it has been revamped and given love.
