Tempera painting and gilding on wood panel as seen in this piece was the main medium used up to and including the Early Renaissance.
The back of this piece is marked with a label that states, "Made in Italy, Elisabetta Montefeltro 1450, Paolo Uccello , New York."
Upon doing research, I found that the original is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. It is part of a collection labeled Master of Castello Nativity, which refers to an artist about whom little is known. All pieces within this collection, share the same style.
What is known is that it was done by an artist who was influenced by Domenico Veneziano and Paolo Uccello.
It is a rare piece as most that are seen today are reproduction and prints.
